R&B Singer Chosen to Perform at ‘I Love S.O.B.’s’ Festival

Sonyae Elise

New Jersey born R&B singer Sonyae Elise was one of the ReverbNation artists chosen to perform at the “I Love S.O.B.’s” music festival on April 30th.

On its 30-year anniversary, the famous Manhattan live music venue S.O.B’s decided to follow up their insane showing at this year’s SXSW festival, which included performances by Miguel, Machine Gun Kelly, Slaughterhouse, and 2 Chainz (who brought out Kanye West for a surprise set) with the month long “I Love S.O.B.’s” music festival. And in addition to a killer line-up, S.O.B.’s wanted to showcase a couple of independent artists and that’s when we came in offering the opportunity to our wide roster of amazing artists. Sonyae saw the opportunity and grabbed it.

Curious to learn more about her? So were we. Keep reading to find out how she first heard about the opportunity to play at the festival, what drove her to apply for it and what she has in store for her fans this year.

Having worked in theatre since the third grade, Sonyae quickly gravitated towards on and off Broadway stage performances for acclaimed shows such as Lion King, Le Miserable, Little Shop of Horrors and Rag Time. Sonyae’s musical influences range from 2 Pac to Prince, Linda Jones to Ella Fitzgerald and Phyllis Hyman to Barbara Streisand.

“My intentions are to provoke the very emotion in people that made me fall in love with this art form,” Sonyae says. “Essentially, I create to keep from going insane… the fact that others can relate, laugh, cry and possibly find their own peace of mind through my music is a plus.”

Sonyae has been extremely busy preparing for her time to shine and is now the winner of the new Bravo television series ‘Platinum Hit’.

How did you hear about the S.O.B.’s opportunity? Have you applied to other ReverbNation opportunities before?
I heard about the S.O.B.’s opportunity via ReverbNation and it was actually my first time ever hearing about and landing an opportunity of this magnitude thru ReverbNation.

Have you played S.O.B’s before? What attracted you to this opportunity?
I have performed at S.O.B.’s before but alongside other featured artist. This will be my first time performing at S.O.B.’s as a featured artist with an entire set. I’m excited!

What are you looking forward to with this show? Tell us a little about the music you have planned.
Most of the music I’m performing is unreleased so I’m looking forward to sharing new music with my #Rebs! I’m anxious to see/feel the response. The music is emotional and raw so people can expect a real live soul session! I’ll be singing, rapping and talking my shyt so be prepared for a good time.

What are your other touring plans for the summer? This year?
Touring plans for this summer are TBA. This year I’ll be working on my first studio album as well as doing a bunch of writing and collaborating with other artist.

Listen to Sonyae’s music here.

The Explorers Club Selected to Perform at Earth Day

Charleston, South Carolina band The Explorers Club was selected to perform at Sunday’s Earth Day event on the National Mall in Washington, DC. We can’t imagine a better stage to share their positive energy and sunny outlook than this massive celebration.

This year’s all-day event will feature A-list musical talent as well as prominent speakers and celebrities, including Cheap Trick, Dave Mason and Kicking Daisies. Over 100,000 people are expected to attend. Plus, in addition to live news coverage and global webcasts, YouTube will stream the entire day’s events.

When asked about the opportunity, The Explorers Club band leader Jason Brewer said, “We thought it would be great to play in front of a large audience in DC.  We hope that our fun and sunny sound will translate well to the Earth Day crowd.”

On their way north to DC, the band took time to stop in North Carolina, performing this morning on Charlotte Today. Take a look at the video of their performance and listen to “Run, Run, Run.”

The Explorers Club is: Jason Brewer (guitars, keyboards, vocals), Dave Ellis (guitars, mandolin, accordian, percussion, vocals), Wally Reddington III (bass, vocals), Justin James (guitar, steel guitar, vocals), Paul Runyon (keyboards, vocals), and Kyle Polk (drums). Photo by Matthew Carter.

The Explorers Club hit #27 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart in February with their new album, “Grand Hotel.” Mark Linett, who mixed The Beach Boys’ “SMiLE” for Capitol Records, was responsible for the mix on “Grand Hotel.”

Says AllMusic.com of the new album: “Most bands vehemently deny that they’re attempting to overtly re-create the sound of their influences, often going to great lengths to distance themselves from their inspirations. The Explorers Club… are experts at the art of homage. …While there’s an undeniable, late-‘60s sunshine pop vibe to many of the arrangements here… more than anything, Grand Hotel seems concerned with offering up tunes that could have been hits on early-‘70s AM radio.”

While we can’t all make it to DC this weekend, we can join the over one billion people observing Earth Day — the only event celebrated simultaneously around the globe by people of all backgrounds, faiths and nationalities. Let us know where you are and what you’re doing to observe Earth Day this year in the comments below.

Looking for Artists on the Verge: Nominations Now Underway

We’ve got a unique opportunity to nominate ReverbNation artists that are set to break to the New Music Seminar’s “Top 100 Artists on the Verge” chart — the most comprehensive chart to date for emerging artists in America.

Every year, New Music Seminar (NMS) hand crafts this chart to promote artists who are already picking up steam, helping them break through the noise and get the national recognition they deserve. Many of the artists chosen for the chart will perform at the 2012 NMS New York Music Festival, June 17th-21st.

The NMS delegates will choose the winning artist on the last day of the conference. In addition to the unparalleled exposure, the winning band gets more than $200,000 in marketing, promotion, music equipment and consultations from some of the top industry leaders.

NMS’s mission to create a music business in which artists can rise to their highest potential based solely on merit, “fits perfectly with ours here at Reverb — artist first,” said Mike Doernberg, ReverbNation CEO and a panelist at the Seminar in New York. “That’s why we’re delighted to be a part of both the Seminar and Artists on the Verge.”

Submit to be nominated here.

Interview with Daria Musk, the Queen of Google+ Hangouts

If you’ve heard of Google+ Hangouts, you’ve probably heard or seen Daria Musk. A Reverb artist since 2008, Daria pioneered the use of Google+ Hangouts for musicians when she hosted an 8-hour hangout concert last August (a month before will.i.am from Black Eyed Peas hosted his). On this impromptu interview in front of Kingdom Club in Austin, TX, Daria tells us about her SXSW experience and how the whole Google+ Hangouts experience happened in the first place. She also told us her favorite color.

Much like everything else that goes down at SXSW, I ran into Daria by total chance while walking on the busy streets of Austin. Her bubbly, outgoing and energetic personality made our connection that much better. I’m proud to say we became BFFs for a night.

Make sure to read our other blog posts on SXSW and watch the other cool videos on our YouTube channel!

News: Wakarusa Festival Selects Three ReverbNation Bands to Perform

Back in November, we announced that through our partnership with Wakarusa Music and Camping Festival, bands could submit to play at this grassroots music classic completely free of charge for the first time in the festival’s history.

“An unbelievable amount of artists submitted to play at Wakarusa this year through ReverbNation,” said Brett Mosiman, co-founder and director of Wakarusa Music and Camping Festival. “We were blown away by the overall talent that we reviewed through these last few weeks. Only picking three artists was as difficult of a task as we’ve had.”

Listen share and like 4onthefloor, Sumilan and Eitch. They deserve it.

4onthefloor, self-proclaimed “stompin’ blues” band from Minneapolis, MN:

Sumilan, rock/progressive band from Athens, GA:

Eitch, she playfully describes herself as “altronipop” from New York, NY:

What will they receive?
– Compensation for their performance.
– Great exposure playing in front of more than 15,000 festival attendees.

Who will they share stages with?
2012 Lineup: Pretty Lights ~ The Avett Brothers ~ Primus ~ Weir, Robinson, & Greene Acoustic Trio ~ Umphrey’s McGee ~ Slightly Stoopid ~ Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros ~ Girl Talk ~ Fitz & the Tantrums ~ Matisyahu ~ G. Vote! Send a ReverbNation Band to London’s Hard Rock Calling and Download 80+ Free Songs

Back in January, ReverbNation partnered with Hard Rock Cafe to launch an epic global competition. The goal? Narrow down a field of over 12,000 applicants from cities around the world to find the buzziest, most beloved band. The contest started at the local level with 86 download competitions hosted on each participating local Hard Rock Cafe’s Facebook page. Only locals were allowed to vote to ensure we were starting with the best local talent pool available. Then it moved to the live stage. Over 850 semi-finalists geared up and trucked in to Hard Rock locations around the world to perform their hit song and face judging from their peers. For the full details, we wrote a blog post about it.

Well folks, after three months and two rounds, we’ve slimmed the competition to one finalist from each city. In this last phase, all 80+ finalists will battle it out online to see who can gather the most votes. Anyone with a valid Facebook account may vote, but you can only vote for one band. So choose wisely. The top 10 vote-getters will be judged by a celebrity panel but only one will win a trip to London to open Hard Rock Calling!

FREE CURATED MUSIC
Music discovery gives us that warm and fuzzy feeling. Do you feel it too? All 80+ songs in this final phase are free to download!  Support your local city rep by voting their song then discover and download as many songs as you want!

WHAT CAN THEY WIN?
For making it to the Global Phase of Hard Rock Rising, all finalists are taking home a year of ReverbNation premium service  — RPKs, FanReach Pro, Pro Widgets, and MegaSong Storage — $500 in cash, $500 in Hard Rock Cafe credit, and $500 toward a sponsored PROMOTE IT campaign, to help them promote their song during the competition. PROMOTE IT is a revolutionary premium marketing service from ReverbNation that allows artists to promote a song on Facebook through our powerful and easy-to-use interface. Finalists in Hard Rock Rising will  have a custom banner on their PROMOTE IT landing page that solicits fans to vote and drives them to the Hard Rock Rising contest app with the artist’s song at the very top!

Second and third prize winners will also receive $5,000 and $2,500, respectively, in additional PROMOTE IT credits. The grand prize winner will be flown to London for the ultimate rock star treatment, including a spot on the bill at Hard Rock Calling 2012, headlined by Bruce Springsteen.
