It’s microphone mastery time, folks. Whether you’re a crooner, instrument geek, or linguistic lover, you’re gonna need to understand how mics work and how best to utilize them for your needs. Here’s a video primer from Soundfly to get you stage ready.
In three minutes and twenty seconds you’ll:
- Get an overview of microphone types
- Learn the various parts of a microphone and how they work individually and together
- Know which one to use and how to use it
And when you’re through, give this free (yes, FREE) online course a look on how to set up your mics, capture sounds, and manipulate them in Ableton Live to make more interesting music.

Great article, especially for singers. I think it’s really important that singers learn more about how microphones actually work. That way they can deal with on-stage mishappenings, like what to do when feedback occurs. Plus it feeds creativity in the studio, allowing them to create new sounds by pushing the boundaries of “conventional recording”.
