‘Tis the season! Yes, I’m talking about the season of beautiful lights hung all around the city, twinkling Christmas trees, holiday music pouring out of every store, and of course, delicious baked goods. But you know what else it’s the season for? Incredibly unique and collectible merch from you to your fans (or gifts, if you prefer), in the most thoughtful and DIY way possible.
Because let’s face it, merch is a big deal. Fans don’t buy music anymore and with shows being, well, nonexistent during the pandemic, we kind of have to hang our hats on the merch we can sell, or the gifts we can give, anything to potentially bring in profit but also make a lasting impression on our fans, and let them know that we’re here for them, and even if we haven’t seen them in a while and things may be tough, we’re still here, and our bond is still as strong as ever.
And while there’s nothing wrong with a mass made item that you can sell to fans like keychains or pins, there’s something special about a handmade gift. Not only will your fans know the care that went into making it, but because they’re handmade you’ll also be able to have just a limited supply, making it all the more special for your fans. You can do any of these as merch you sell, contests, or gifts for your superfans. Your choice.
Each one made with love from their favorite band, with just 10-20 out there? Your fans will thank you forever.
Alright, let’s get on to some fun ideas!
DIY Ugly Sweaters
I honestly can’t think of a better item to be on this list. A custom DIY ugly sweater from my favorite band would be almost too good to be true. There are so many ways you could do this—you could make a DIY version of the sweater for your fans that represents your band by having the band’s logo, colors, or lyrics.
OR you could customize the ugly sweater to each of your fans that buys one. So, they’d order one, fill out a brief Q&A telling you all about them and their interests, and then you’d create a one of a kind, custom designed sweater that matches their style and tastes. You could even write on the back in small letters “made with love by BAND.”
Personally, I’d love to receive one of these. And with a few crafts from the store like a blank sweater, some glitter, glue pens, sparkles, and really, whatever else you want, this is easy to make and they’ll fly off the (digital) shelves.
Along the same line as the sweater we have custom stockings. Like with the sweater, you can create stockings that are 100% DIY (sparkles, glitter, you get the idea) that have your band’s logo, or a favorite lyric, or something else that’s uniquely you, OR you can personalize it in the same way suggested above.
You can pick up a blank stocking in a variety of colors at any discount store or craft store. If you really want to give your fans a gift to remember, you can even stuff the stockings with a few other goodies like candy, extra merch, and a “ticket” to an upcoming event. Don’t forget the personalized note!
Who doesn’t love to receive a handwritten note? Especially this time of year, your fans will love getting a handwritten thank you note for all they’ve supported you through this year. You can get their addresses by checking out where they had previous merch delivered to, or making a post that says you’re sending out cards to the first 20 people and they just need to comment and DM their address. Easy peasy.
This is such a great way for your fans to give a gift to themselves or the ones they love, by having you write a custom song. You can be as simple or complex as you want. It could be an existing song where you simply swap out names “IE: Happy Holidays (name)”, or it can be completely custom based on the person’s interests, hobbies, and whatever theme they ask. There are so many possibilities with this one.
A Hand-Knit Scarf
Fancy yourself a great knitter? Why not create a scarf that’s your band’s colors? Or gloves, or sweater, or really anything else you want. Not great at knitting? No worries! Just replace this one with whatever craft you are good at. It could be popsicle sticks or cardboard paper. The point is just that it’s something uniquely YOU that your fans will love.
What gift would you love to get from your favorite band?
